Indian Cinema GK Part 1




1) Davika Rani Choudhury is known as the first lady of Indian cinema.
2) Davika Rani was educated in boarding school in England since her age at 9 years. How could a woman who had education from a foreign institute, understand the social issues of Indian society?
3) Davika Rani was married with Himanshu Rai.
4) Davika Rani's debut film was Karma (in English) also known as Nagin ki Ragini (in Hindi) was produced in Hindi and English.
5) Film Karma was flopped badly in India because people during 1930's didn't like to watch a prolong kissing scene featuring the real life couple as they were having sense of vulgarity and non-vulgarity.
6) Davika Rani got Padmashri award in 1958 and 1st Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1970.
7) Russian government had honoured Davika Rani with Soviet Land Nehru Award.
8) Davika Rani's father Manmatha Nath Choudhuri was first Indian Surgeon General of Madras Presidency.
9) Bollywood's first English song was sang by Davika Rani.
10) Himanshu Rai established a film studio named Bombay talkies in 1934.
11) Bombay talkies released it's first film in 1935 titled as Jawani ki hawa which was a Hindi film starring Davika Rani and Najm-ul-Hassan.
12) 1935 film Jawani ki hawa was shot fully on a train.
13) Davika Rani who was married to Himanshu Rai was in love with her costar Najm-ul-Hassan.
14) Due to affair of Davika Rani with Najm-ul-Hassan, shooting of film Jeevan Naiya was affected and Bombay talkies suffered huge financial loss and a loss of credit among bankers.
15) In love with Najm-ul-Hassan, Davika Rani eloped with him, but Himanshu Rai with help of his assistant at studio Sashadhar Mukherjee convinced her to come back and accepted her conditions of return.
16) Davika Rani actually wanted to take divorce from her husband Himanshu Rai but at that time it was legally impossible for a Hindu woman to take divorce.
17) Due to affiar of Davika Rani with Najm-ul-Hassan, Himanshu Rai replaced Najm-ul-Hassan's role with Ashok Kumar in film Jeevan Naiya.
18) Film Jeevan Naiya was Ashok Kumar's debut film.
19) Sashadhar Mukherjee what's friend and assistant of Sudhanshu Rai. Ashok Kumar was brother of Mukherjee's wife. Nepotism was present in Bollywood since it's early decades.
20) 1936 film titled Achhut Kannya was a love story of untouchable girl and Brahmin boy. This film in fact created Amity between untouchables and Brahmins.
21) again in 1937 film Jeevan Prabhat produced by Bombay talkies shown a story of extra marital affair of abrahamin woman with an untouchable man again defend upper cast Hindus and created in Mithi between upper and lower castes.
22) In 1940, Sudhanshu Rai died and Devika Rani took over the control of Bombay talkies studio.
23) in 1945 Devika Rani quited film industry and married to Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich.
24) Devika Rani died of bronchitis on 9th March 1994.
25) Devika Rani was known as the dragon lady for her smoking drinking cursing and hot temper.
26) a poster stamp of Devika Rani was released by the ministry of communications and information technology in February 2011.
27) Devika Rani was closely related to Rabindranath Tagore from her paternal and maternal families.
28) Devika Rani head friendly relations with Nehru family since 1945 when she moved to Manali Himachal Pradesh with her second husband Svetoslav Roerich.
29) This was Davika Rani who had a father employees with British Government, father and mother related to Rabindranath Tagore, relations with Nehru family and was a Padma awardee.
